A Viking inspired renewal of vows in Cornwall

I had the utmost pleasure to plan this wholesome Viking and Lord of the Rings inspired renewal of vows for a pagan couple in Cornwall.

Viking inspired renewal of vows with a handfasting ceremony.

The couple initially connected with me through one of Facebook’s alternative wedding planning groups. Whether by chance or fate, I will leave that interpretation to you.

From the get go I knew this couple valued authenticity, which I strived for throughout the planning process. Norse mythology is among my special interests and as such I was aware of traditional aspects relevant to this type of ceremony. We explored ideas around authentic clothing, Viking traditions and the significance of the timing for this renewal of vows.

The ceremony was intimate, attended solely by the couple, myself, and a photographer, allowing for an intimate experience with embracing the tranquil flow of energy.

Summer solstice:

The couple chose to renew their vows with a handfasting ceremony on the Summer Solstice of 2025. This was a meaningful day in their marriage and also a meaningful time of the year for pagans, often associated with a deeper connection to nature.

Handfasting:

To honour the couple's original handfasting and their ongoing commitment we performed a symbolic handfasting ritual. The couple prepared their own vows, which I officiated. Their hands were bound with a handfasting cord crafted by the couple in three meaningful colors representing the past, present, and future.

Clothing:

Each partner chose attire with personal significance to them; One wore viking inspired traditional clothing with a natural sheep skin, while the other wore a Lord of the Rings inspired gown, complemented by a flower crown and carefully selected accessories.

I wore a yellow, medieval styled dress handmade by a small business, paired with natural leather boots.

Outfits were chosen with personal significance.

Axe and Sword exchange:

We symbolised trust and protection with a traditional sword and axe exchange. These tools, often associated with defense, represent the couple's trust and commitment to each other.

Runes, elements and calling in the quarters:

We included meaningful natural runes as well as symbolic items to represent the elements. I brought my own Labradorite stone to incorporate my Finnish spirituality. A sacred circle was cast using a compass welcoming the guidance of the Gods and the elemental guardians.

Food:

We enjoyed a Viking styled feast including produce such as sourdough bread, spreadable cheese, blocks of cheese, meat, fruit and of course, MEAD! We used traditional drinking horns for an authentic experience. There was plenty for all to enjoy.

Cheers!
